[00:00:01] Here's your afternoon TNB Tech Minute for Monday, September 14. I'm Julie Chang for The Wall Street Journal. President Trump today pushed back on the need for tighter federal regulations on AI. It comes as industry leaders warn about the potential dangers of their own technology. On Truth Social, Trump wrote that AI needs to be, quote, strong and smart, and that the call for more regulation is a conspiracy against data centers.
[00:00:28] He also said regulation would give China a competitive edge, something China objected to. The country's foreign ministry spokesman said the U.S.'s claims that China's development of AI is creating threats would, quote, derail global AI governance. Top New York City Council members are urging a ban on student use of YouTube in city schools, citing falling test scores and concerns from parents and teachers.
[00:00:55] Their proposal follows Mayor Zoran Mamdani's recent ban on AI for elementary and middle schoolers. The council plan would block students from accessing YouTube on their devices and require the Department of Education to justify other uses, such as teachers showing videos in class. Google declined to comment on the proposal.
[00:01:16] Meanwhile, YouTube is joining forces with Amazon and Netflix to form a new group that will advocate for consumer choice in online content. The Streaming Access and Choice Alliance will be led by TechNet, an advocacy network of tech CEOs and executives. The new coalition said it'll push for policies that expand consumer access to high-quality content and preserve choice.
