AI Growth Challenges in Tech, Healthcare, and Government: Insights on Integration and Future Trends

Analysts from Jeffreies predict that true AI integration in smartphones, particularly with the iPhone 16, is still two to three years away, leading to a downgrade in Apple's stock rating. Despite some optimism for future AI capabilities, the episode emphasizes the need for human involvement in AI applications, especially in cybersecurity, as noted by CISA's chief AI officer, Lisa Einstein.

The conversation shifts to the healthcare sector, where host Dave Sobel shares alarming statistics about the administrative burdens faced by healthcare providers. With 41% of providers spending over four hours daily on administrative tasks and 68% struggling with fax management, the episode underscores the significant gap between AI's promise and its practical application in improving healthcare delivery. Sobel argues that IT service providers have a crucial role in helping clients navigate this transition, particularly in customizing AI solutions and managing cultural shifts.

Sobel also covers recent advancements in AI technology, including Zoom's AI Companion 2.0 and its integration with ServiceNow to enhance meeting productivity. The episode highlights Fairfax County, Virginia's initiative to implement an AI system for managing non-emergency 911 calls, showcasing a scalable model for AI deployment in public services. Despite the potential benefits, Sobel notes that government agencies are lagging in generative AI adoption, with many expressing concerns about cultural resistance and compatibility with legacy systems.

Finally, the episode delves into Microsoft's challenges in the AI space, particularly with its Copilot initiatives, which have not met enterprise needs. Sobel discusses the projected spending on AI and the importance of a robust infrastructure to support it. He concludes by emphasizing that AI is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and customers require strategic, tailored advice to maximize their investments. The episode serves as a reminder of the ongoing evolution of AI and the opportunities it presents for IT service providers.

[00:00:02] It's Friday, October 11th, 2024, and I'm Dave Sobel. Three things to know today. Slow AI growth in smartphones, healthcare, and jobs, bridging the gap between promise and practicality.

[00:00:13] AI expands across sectors. Zoom and ServiceNow integrate generative AI while public sector embraces some AI solutions.

[00:00:21] And Microsoft's leadership and enterprise struggles highlight the gaps in market booms for IT providers. This is the Business of Tech.

[00:00:31] Jeffries analysts predict that real AI smartphones are still two to three years away, citing the iPhone 16's lack of new features and limited AI capabilities.

[00:00:41] Following the downgrade of Apple's stock rating from buy to hold, the stock fell 2.3%.

[00:00:46] While some analysts remain optimistic about the long-term potential of AI in iPhones, they forecast minimal growth for the iPhone 16 compared to its predecessor.

[00:00:56] Despite the current limitations, there's an anticipation for future AI capabilities with estimates of 490 million AI-capable iPhones by 2026.

[00:01:07] CISA's Chief AI Officer, Lisa Einstein, emphasizes the necessity of human involvement in AI applications for cybersecurity, advocating for strong human processes alongside AI tools.

[00:01:21] She warns against over-reliance on AI, highlighting that human oversight remains critical due to historical software security issues.

[00:01:30] MIT professor Darren Acemulu warns that only 5% of jobs will be replaced or significantly supplemented by AI in the next decade, suggesting that the anticipated economic revolution may not materialize.

[00:01:44] He highlights concerns over the potential waste of investments in AI and the risk of a tech stock crash due to inflated expectations.

[00:01:54] And over in medical economics, there's an article on AI too, but the data I want to relay is this list.

[00:02:01] 41% of healthcare providers spend over 4 hours daily on administrative tasks.

[00:02:06] 68% of respondents struggle with fax volume and complexity in managing patient data.

[00:02:13] 85% of providers value interoperability for better decision-making at the point of care.

[00:02:19] And 64% of providers experience more than 10 no-shows weekly, impacting care delivery and revenue.

[00:02:26] Why do we care?

[00:02:28] While AI continues to make inroads in both public and private sectors, there's a significant gap between its promise and its practical application.

[00:02:34] For IT service providers, the opportunities lie in helping clients navigate the transition period.

[00:02:41] Whether it's customizing AI for specific business needs, ensuring smooth integrations with legacy systems, or managing the cultural shifts required for successful adoption.

[00:02:51] The transition will be significantly longer than you might think.

[00:02:55] It starts with data management.

[00:02:58] I'm excited for you to hear my interview this weekend on data management.

[00:03:01] Note the reliance on fax machines and medicine.

[00:03:05] Fax machines.

[00:03:07] That's why I say it'll take a while.

[00:03:11] Looking to reach an audience of thousands of MSPs and IT service providers?

[00:03:16] Put your ad right here on The Business of Tech.

[00:03:19] And be on the show that 64% of MSPs report having listened to.

[00:03:24] A recurring Top 50 tech news podcast.

[00:03:27] There are affordable options for you to reach our audience.

[00:03:31] And we can support any budget.

[00:03:33] Podcast listeners are more engaged, have a higher level of brand retention, and are more willing to listen to ads here than any other avenues.

[00:03:43] Want to know more?

[00:03:44] There's information at MSP radio dot com slash engage, including a button to book a time to talk.

[00:03:51] I'm looking forward to that discussion.

[00:03:56] Zoom's latest feature update, AI Companion 2.0, enhances its platform by integrating AI to assist users in Zoom Workplace.

[00:04:05] This assistant can remember past conversations, summarize documents, and generate content drafts while working with external applications.

[00:04:12] Although it will be free for Zoom Workplace subscribers next month, it won't be universally accessible.

[00:04:20] Additionally, Zoom AI Studio allows customization of the AI Companion for specific company needs.

[00:04:27] The update also includes industry specific features for sectors like healthcare and education, focusing on improving collaboration for remote and hybrid teams.

[00:04:36] ServiceNow and Zoom have announced an integration of their generative AI technologies to enhance meeting productivity by automating workflows based on discussions during Zoom meetings.

[00:04:45] The collaboration aims to streamline actions within the ServiceNow platform, making it easier for businesses to leverage generative AI capabilities.

[00:04:53] The integration will be straightforward, focused on governance and permissions to ensure oversight.

[00:04:58] Zoom's AI Companion will enhance this experience by providing a system of action, allowing users to orchestrate workflows seamlessly.

[00:05:06] The integration is expected to be available in early 2025.

[00:05:10] This story is local to me, and I thought it very insightful.

[00:05:14] Fairfax County, Virginia, plans to implement an AI system to manage non-emergency 911 calls, aiming to reduce wait times and improve efficiency.

[00:05:23] The AI will handle various non-emergency inquiries, provide immediate translation for non-English speakers, and route calls to appropriate agencies when necessary.

[00:05:33] This shift comes as non-emergency calls have surpassed emergency calls, highlighting the need for a sustainable approach to call management.

[00:05:41] The system is expected to alleviate the mental strain on call takers and enhance response during emergencies.

[00:05:48] Government agencies are lagging in generative AI adoption, despite 60% believing it will drive innovation.

[00:05:54] A survey conducted by SAS shows 84% plan to invest in generative AI next fiscal year, with 91% already allocating budget for it.

[00:06:04] Concerns include cultural resistance and compatibility with legacy systems.

[00:06:08] Only 52% have policies for generative AI use, and awareness among employees is low at 35%.

[00:06:15] However, those using generative AI report improved employee satisfaction and operational efficiencies.

[00:06:22] Oh, and there's this story.

[00:06:24] OpenAI's projections indicate that the company will not achieve profitability until 2029, with anticipated revenue reaching $100 billion.

[00:06:32] However, losses could escalate to $14 billion in 2026, nearly tripling the expected loss for this year, according to financial documents reviewed by the information.

[00:06:44] This estimate excludes stock compensation, a significant non-cash expense for OpenAI.

[00:06:52] Why do we care?

[00:06:53] The previous statements all stand here.

[00:06:55] AI is not a magic bullet and its full potential is still several years away.

[00:07:00] The Fairfax County use case presents a scalable model for how AI can be deployed to optimize public sector services.

[00:07:07] IT providers, particularly those working with government contracts, should take note of the shift toward AI in call management systems.

[00:07:14] I reported yesterday on the thoughts of the help desk being disrupted too.

[00:07:18] It's all intermingled.

[00:07:19] And notably, on a timeframe, potentially like OpenAI's.

[00:07:24] Fully profitable in 2029, perhaps?

[00:07:28] And lots of big ideas this week.

[00:07:31] First, on leadership, the information highlights how Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella engages with startup founders, venture capitalists, and Fortune 500 CEOs to stay ahead of business threats.

[00:07:42] His recent conversation with Aravant Sranvenas, CEO of AI startup Perplexity, highlights his proactive approach to understanding competitors like Google and emphasizes his detailed focus, showcating his idea of founder-bound operating style.

[00:07:56] The Register has more on Microsoft.

[00:07:59] Microsoft's co-pilot AI initiatives have underperformed, failing to meet enterprise needs and leading to skepticism about their value.

[00:08:06] While Teams has seen some success, the overall integration of co-pilot into Microsoft 365 has yet to justify the investment.

[00:08:15] In contrast, Google's Notebook LM offers a promising solution for enterprises to manage and query documents effectively, highlighting a gap in Microsoft's offerings despite its significant investments in AI.

[00:08:27] Microsoft is chasing Google again.

[00:08:31] Microscope reviews how organizations are projected to spend over $630 billion on AI by 2028, presenting challenges and opportunities for the IT channel.

[00:08:41] Key considerations include the need for a robust infrastructure to support AI, ensuring data cleanliness and security, addressing security risks associated with AI systems, and bridging the talent gap in the AI market.

[00:08:53] Channel partners can be crucial by providing tailored solutions, building comprehensive AI tech stacks, and navigating governance and compliance standards.

[00:09:03] And Amy Lenander of Capital One writes in Forbes about making data AI-ready.

[00:09:08] To prepare for AI, organizations should foster a data-driven culture, leverage proprietary data, establish central data platforms, capture various data types, and cultivate talent.

[00:09:20] These principles create a robust data ecosystem that enables effective AI utilization, requiring ongoing investment and commitment from leadership to adapt and thrive in the landscape.

[00:09:30] And finally, over in Managed Services Journal, computer vision is emerging as a lucrative opportunity for managed services providers, with the market expected to grow significantly.

[00:09:41] Key applications include quality control, inventory management, security surveillance, retail analytics, and healthcare.

[00:09:49] Providers can offer value-added services such as consultation, data management, and ongoing support, while monetization strategies may include one-time fees, subscriptions, usage-based pricing, and value-based pricing.

[00:10:01] Radius AI's Shop Assist exemplifies innovative solutions in retail, enhancing self-checkout experiences while reducing theft and improving inventory management.

[00:10:13] Why do we care?

[00:10:15] This week's ideas are a mix of leadership insights, AI struggles, market growth, and opportunities for providers.

[00:10:21] The overarching theme is that AI is not a one-size-fits-all solution.

[00:10:25] Customers need strategic, tailored advice to get the most out of their investments.

[00:10:30] Service providers are in a prime position to offer this guidance.

[00:10:36] Thanks for listening.

[00:10:38] Today is National Coming Out Day, also National Sausage Pizza Day.

[00:10:42] I'll be doing two live broadcasts as part of SMB TechFest on October 17th and 18th, so make sure to sign up and join the event.

[00:10:50] SMBTechFest.com slash go slash Sobel, link in the show notes.

[00:10:54] This weekend, tomorrow in the podcast feed is the live show from this week featuring journalist Paris Marx.

[00:11:00] We talk about their upcoming series on data centers.

[00:11:04] Then on Sunday, Colin Graves discusses data readiness.

[00:11:08] Both of these are can't-miss episodes.

[00:11:10] If you've got a comment or a thought on a story, put it in the comments if you're on YouTube,
