AI in Business Growth, Wildfire Detection, Healthcare Innovations, and Nostalgic Windows Updates

Host Dave Sobel discusses the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in small businesses, highlighting a recent survey by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The survey reveals that 98% of small businesses are utilizing AI tools, with a notable increase in the adoption of generative AI. While many small business owners view AI as a crucial driver for growth, there are significant workforce concerns, with one in three workers advocating for a ban on AI in the workplace due to fears about job security. The episode emphasizes the need for balanced approaches that address both the potential benefits of AI and the anxieties it generates among employees.

Sobel also explores innovative AI applications in various sectors, including wildfire detection, healthcare, and disaster response. Projects like Firesat and PanoAI are developing technologies to enhance early wildfire detection, while MyChart is using AI to assist doctors in managing patient communications. However, these advancements come with challenges, such as the need for long-term studies to evaluate effectiveness and concerns about transparency and accuracy in healthcare communications. The episode underscores the importance of responsible AI integration and the potential risks associated with its use in critical areas.

The discussion extends to the implications of AI in cybersecurity, particularly the rise of generative AI being exploited by cybercriminals to create malware. Sobel highlights a recent incident involving an email campaign that targeted French users with malicious software, showcasing how lower-skilled hackers are leveraging AI to enhance their capabilities. This trend raises urgent questions about the need for comprehensive management and governance of AI technologies, as well as the expanding role of IT service providers in educating businesses about compliance and risk management.

Finally, the episode touches on community-driven efforts to revive Windows Update for older operating systems, allowing users to update vintage systems like Windows 95 and XP with security fixes. While this initiative appeals to nostalgia, Sobel cautions that these unsupported systems pose significant security risks. The episode concludes with a call for IT service providers to help businesses navigate the complexities of AI and cybersecurity, emphasizing the critical need for clear policies, training, and responsible management as AI tools become increasingly prevalent in the business landscape.

[00:01:47] [SPEAKER_00]: This is the Business of Tech.

[00:01:52] [SPEAKER_00]: A survey by the US Chamber of Commerce reveals that 98% of small businesses use AI tools,

[00:01:58] [SPEAKER_00]: with 40% utilizing generative AI, a significant increase from 23% last year.

[00:02:04] [SPEAKER_00]: The findings indicate that technologies correlates with business growth as companies employing

[00:02:10] [SPEAKER_00]: various tech platforms, report higher sales, profits, and workforce increases.

[00:02:15] [SPEAKER_00]: Small businesses leveraging AI are optimistic about future growth, viewing it as a means

[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_00]: Get started with your free NFR account at bloomiron.com slash radio that's BLU-M-I-R-A dot com slash radio.

[00:04:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Let's make this all tangible.

[00:04:33] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm tracking notable use cases that I wanted to highlight.

[00:04:36] [SPEAKER_00]: AI technology is being developed to enhance wildfire detection with projects like fire

[00:04:42] [SPEAKER_00]: sat aiming to deploy a satellite constellation that can spot small fires globally and provide

[00:04:49] [SPEAKER_00]: updates every 20 minutes. Other efforts include Pano-Ayes camera stations that detect fires early

[00:04:56] [SPEAKER_00]: from high vantage points. While these technologies promise to improve early detection,

[00:05:01] [SPEAKER_00]: challenges include the name for long-term studies to assess their effectiveness

[00:05:05] [SPEAKER_00]: and the financial burden of implementation as significant funding is required to launch

[00:05:10] [SPEAKER_00]: and maintain these systems.

[00:05:13] [SPEAKER_00]: My chart, a patient health care portal, now uses AI to help doctors draft responses to patient

[00:05:20] [SPEAKER_00]: messages, raising concerns about transparency and potential errors. While the tool aims to

[00:05:30] [SPEAKER_00]: realize the quality of medical advice and the doctor-patient relationship, some health systems

[00:05:36] [SPEAKER_00]: disclose AI involvement while others do not, during it may undermine trust.

[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_00]: The AI tool has shown mixed results in improving efficiency and carries risks of inaccuracies

[00:05:48] [SPEAKER_00]: prompting debate on the appropriateness of AI in direct patient communication.

[00:05:53] [SPEAKER_00]: The Australian Red Cross has implemented AI solutions including an AI powered transcription

[00:05:59] [SPEAKER_00]: and translation system, an OZLAND translation API for emergency videos, and an internal

[00:06:05] [SPEAKER_00]: natural language processing bot named TET. These innovations have significantly reduced

[00:06:11] [SPEAKER_00]: waiting times and administrative burden saving approximately 1.3 million hours for employees.

[00:06:18] [SPEAKER_00]: The organization has also completed a foundational digital transformation, consolidating

[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_00]: its infrastructure into six core systems to enhance data management and governance in preparation

[00:06:27] [SPEAKER_00]: for AI integration. And Victoria Australia's Department of Families, Fairness and Housing

[00:06:34] [SPEAKER_00]: has been directed to band-genitive AI tools after a case worker used chatGPT to draft a

[00:06:42] [SPEAKER_00]: child protection report which contained inaccurate personal information and violated privacy rules.

[00:06:48] [SPEAKER_00]: An investigation revealed that the report downplayed risks to a child and that the case worker

[00:06:54] [SPEAKER_00]: had entered sensitive information into chatGPT. OVIC found indicators of chatGPT used in

[00:07:02] [SPEAKER_00]: 100 other cases, and noted that nearly 900 employees accessed the tool. The Department must implement

[00:07:09] [SPEAKER_00]: a band and technical controls by November 5th. And it's not all good. Hackers are increasingly

[00:07:15] [SPEAKER_00]: using generative AI to create malware as evidenced by a recent email campaign targeting French

[00:07:21] [SPEAKER_00]: users that delivered a singrat malware. Researchers found that lower skilled cybercriminals

[00:07:27] [SPEAKER_00]: leverage AI to develop malware and customize it for specific targets very quickly.

[00:07:34] [SPEAKER_00]: Indicators of AI generated malicious code include structured script with detailed comments

[00:07:39] [SPEAKER_00]: on the use of native language for function names. The report highlights that generative

[00:07:44] [SPEAKER_00]: AI enables fast-remailware creation even if not fully functional, enhancing capabilities

[00:07:49] [SPEAKER_00]: of these less technical hackers. Why do we care? These case studies not only highlight AI's

[00:07:57] [SPEAKER_00]: transformative potential, but also its vulnerabilities and the urgent need for comprehensive

[00:08:02] [SPEAKER_00]: responsible management of this technology. The role of IT service providers is expanding beyond

[00:08:08] [SPEAKER_00]: implementation to encompass education, governance, and security, positioning as a vital partner in

[00:08:16] [SPEAKER_00]: navigating the AI-driven future. Beneath for clear policies and training grows as AI tools

[00:08:22] [SPEAKER_00]: become ubiquitous. Service providers should offer AI governance consulting to help businesses

[00:08:28] [SPEAKER_00]: navigate compliance, ethical considerations, and risk management. And some products I know.

[00:08:37] [SPEAKER_00]: Cloud Flair is launching new tools that allow websites to monitor and block AI data scraping bots,

[00:08:43] [SPEAKER_00]: providing users with real-time insights and control over which bots can access their content.

[00:08:50] [SPEAKER_00]: The bot management suite includes features for labeling and selectively blocking AI agents,

[00:08:56] [SPEAKER_00]: addressing the limitations of the traditional robots.txt file. Additionally, cloud Flair plans to

[00:09:03] [SPEAKER_00]: introduce a marketplace for negotiating scraping terms with AI companies, aiming to ensure

[00:09:09] [SPEAKER_00]: content creators receive value where they work. HP is announced new AI PCs for home and work,

[00:09:17] [SPEAKER_00]: including the Elite Book XG1A, touted as the world's most powerful AI business notebook

[00:09:23] [SPEAKER_00]: and the Elite Book Ultra with an 8-core Snapdragon X processor. The Elite Book X will ship in December

[00:09:31] [SPEAKER_00]: pricing to be determined while the Omni Book Ultra flip is now available at $14.50.

[00:09:37] [SPEAKER_00]: HP is introducing AI to its printers with the new HP Print AI experience currently in beta.

[00:09:44] [SPEAKER_00]: The feature includes perfect output which planes up printouts by removing unwanted content,

[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_00]: optimizing spreadsheets and allowing users to create creating cards from photos using conversational

[00:09:55] [SPEAKER_00]: prompts. Additional print AI features are expected to be launched throughout next year

[00:10:00] [SPEAKER_00]: with details on compatible printers and software requirements are still unclear.

[00:10:05] [SPEAKER_00]: At a product update, only 5,000 of the 100,000 Rabbit R1AI gadgets sold are used daily

[00:10:13] [SPEAKER_00]: by lighting a significant drop in user engagement since its launch. The device, which was rushed

[00:10:18] [SPEAKER_00]: to market has been criticized for failing to meet expectations, leading to a lack of interest

[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_00]: compared to smartphones capabilities. Why do we care? Cloud Flare's tools offer an opening

[00:10:31] [SPEAKER_00]: for discussion about what an organization's policy is. The potential marketplace for negotiating

[00:10:37] [SPEAKER_00]: scraping terms is particularly noteworthy. It shifts the dynamic, allowing content creators and

[00:10:43] [SPEAKER_00]: companies to regain control possibly monetize their data. Implementing these controls effectively

[00:10:49] [SPEAKER_00]: will require businesses to understand the nuances of bot traffic and make strategic decisions

[00:10:54] [SPEAKER_00]: about what data can be shared or blocked. There's an opportunity here for IT service providers

[00:10:59] [SPEAKER_00]: to offer consulting and implementation services that help companies navigate these new controls

[00:11:04] [SPEAKER_00]: and integrate them with existing content management and cybersecurity protocols.

[00:11:12] [SPEAKER_00]: This one is quite fun, and it's here because of that. Community efforts have revived

[00:11:18] [SPEAKER_00]: Windows update for older operating systems ranging from Windows 95 to XP, allowing users to update

[00:11:25] [SPEAKER_00]: these nostalgic systems with security fixes and software. Windows update restored and legacy

[00:11:31] [SPEAKER_00]: update are merging to enhance their services, relying on donations of original Microsoft update packages

[00:11:38] [SPEAKER_00]: under the banner, Windows update restored. Users can explore these updates while enjoying

[00:11:44] [SPEAKER_00]: the historical aspect of using vintage PCs. Why do we care? I could see there are specialized

[00:11:51] [SPEAKER_00]: needs to bring very old machines up to the latest service pack or security update.

[00:11:56] [SPEAKER_00]: It's also the fun of vintage equipment here. Be warned, none of this is supported nor secure.

[00:12:05] [SPEAKER_00]: With as many breaches and security concerns as I report in this show, it should be obvious

[00:12:10] [SPEAKER_00]: that cybersecurity is not just about technology, but also the human expertise needed to interpret

[00:12:16] [SPEAKER_00]: and respond to complex threats. Huntress is focused on elevating SMBs and MSPs around the world.
