Google's Ad Monopoly Ruling, AI Compliance Tools, and Apple's Privacy-First AI Strategy

Google's Ad Monopoly Ruling, AI Compliance Tools, and Apple's Privacy-First AI Strategy

A federal judge has ruled that Google acted illegally to maintain a monopoly in online advertising technology, which could lead to significant changes within the company. The ruling, made by Judge Leone Branchima of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, found that Google unlawfully built dominance in the ad tech market, impacting tools used by publishers and the software facilitating advertising transactions. This decision is part of a broader regulatory effort to rein in the power of major tech companies, with the Justice Department also targeting Apple and Amazon for similar practices. Google, which holds an 87% market share in ad selling technology, plans to appeal the ruling, asserting that its ad tools are beneficial for publishers.

The implications of this ruling extend beyond Google itself, as it directly affects the marketing and customer acquisition strategies of IT service providers (MSPs) that rely on Google's advertising infrastructure. The court's decision could trigger a lengthy appeals process, and any operational changes may take years to implement. However, the ruling marks a significant moment for Google, indicating that its business practices may soon face substantial scrutiny and potential restructuring.

In addition to the Google ruling, the podcast discusses various new tools and technologies aimed at enhancing cybersecurity and compliance for MSPs. Notable announcements include Google’s launch of a new security platform called Google Unified Security, which integrates various security features into a single solution, and HPE Aruba Networking Central's expanded cloud features for managed service providers. These developments highlight the increasing focus on integrated AI-enhanced and compliance-ready security solutions, emphasizing the need for MSPs to align these tools with real client needs rather than simply adopting them as product features.

The episode also explores Apple's innovative approach to artificial intelligence, which prioritizes user privacy by utilizing synthetic datasets for training AI models. This method allows Apple to refine its AI outputs while keeping user data on the device, aligning with privacy regulations. The podcast concludes by addressing the evolving landscape of IT service delivery, urging providers to reconsider outdated technologies and prepare for the integration of AI in their operations, while also emphasizing the importance of security and compliance in this transition.

[00:00:02] It's Friday, April 18th, 2025, and I'm Dave Soule for Things to Know Today. Google loses in court and that could matter for how MSPs market themselves. AI Compliance and a lot of new toys, but are these the tools your clients actually need? Can Privacy-First AI Win? Apple's new approach dares to be different. And, old tech out, smart AI in. What MSPs need to rethink before it's too late. This is the Business of Tech.

[00:00:32] A federal judge has ruled that Google acted illegally to maintain a monopoly in online advertising technology, which could lead to significant changes within the company. Judge Leonie Branchima of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia determined that Google unlawfully built dominance in the ad tech market, affecting tools used by publishers and the software that facilitates advertising transactions.

[00:00:57] The ruling comes amid a broader push by regulators to rein in the power of major tech companies, with the Justice Department also targeting Apple and Amazon for simpler practices. Google, which holds an 87% market share in ad-selling technology, plans to appeal the ruling, asserting that its ad tools are beneficial for publishers. Meanwhile, I did want to note that Meta is also in court, as the FTC is accusing Meta of violating

[00:01:23] competition laws with its acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp. I've linked to some coverage if you want to dive in, although I think it's too early for IT services companies to be concerned. Why do we care? We care because the Google case reached a verdict. This is heavily focused on the advertising technology offered by Google and heavily used by IT service providers and, more importantly, their customers. The ruling against Google's ad tech monopoly is more than just regulatory noise.

[00:01:52] It directly affects a toolset many providers rely on for marketing and customer acquisition, both internally and on behalf of their customers, or that their customers run themselves. Google's dominance in ad-serving infrastructure, with an 87% market share, touches everything from campaign targeting to performance analytics. So mandated changes could ripple through MSP digital marketing practices, customer strategies, and vendor partner programs that depend on Google's stack.

[00:02:21] Now, let's not over-inflate the near-term impact. The court ruling is likely to trigger a lengthy appeals process. Google will fight hard to avoid meaningful structural remedies, and any operational changes, if they even happen, could take years. That said, we care because this is a meaningful moment for Google and their business may be about to change.

[00:02:47] With every new breach and threat that I cover, it's clear that cybersecurity isn't a luxury anymore. It's a necessity. That's where Huntress comes in. Their fully managed cybersecurity platform is built for every kind of business, not just the 1%. Huntress seamlessly integrates their products and threat hunting team. Their EDR, ITDR, SIM, and security awareness training solutions are purposely built for their

[00:03:13] elite 24 by 7 security operations center to stop threats before anyone else even spots them. This potent combination of purpose-built cybersecurity and threat hunting expertise is one of the many reasons why G2 users have voted Huntress the number one rated EDR for growing businesses. [00:03:40] Google has launched a new security platform called Google Unified Security. The platform integrates threat intelligence, security operations, cloud security, and secure enterprise browsing into a single solution, addressing the complexities of enterprise infrastructures. Key features include automated response capabilities that enhance visibility and efficiency for security teams. Additionally, new artificial intelligence agents powered by Gemini will automate routine

[00:04:06] security tasks, allowing analysts to focus on more complex issues. The announcement also includes enhancements to security operations and improved phishing protection in Chrome Enterprise. HPE Aruba Networking Central has announced expanded cloud features aimed at managed service providers, including new virtual private cloud and on-premises deployment options. Notably, the new on-premises

[00:04:33] option features hardware certified to meet government security standards. The platform now offers four deployment choices, catering to various customer needs from enterprise to government. Analysts from TechIsle noted that these capabilities are a strategic move for HPE Aruba, enhancing its competitive edge by targeting market demands for deployment flexibility and artificial intelligence capabilities. However, they warn that managed service providers may need to invest in training to navigate the complexities of these new models.

[00:05:03] ConnectSecure has launched its new Google Workspace assessments. This new capability allows MSPs to quickly assess and mitigate risks across key applications like Gmail, Google Drive, Google Meet, and Calendar. With just a few clicks, MSPs can deliver detailed reports that highlight vulnerabilities and misconfigurations, aiming to improve cloud security posture for their clients. Notably, the deployment is straightforward, enabling

[00:05:29] assessments to be run in minutes. Beachhead Solutions has launched Compliance EZ, a new tool designed for managed service providers to enhance their compliance capabilities. The solution integrates with the Beachhead Secure for MSPs platform at no additional cost and provides real-time evidence of compliance with various regulatory frameworks, including NIST and HIPAA. Compliance EZ allows MSPs to document how their software meets over 800

[00:05:58] compliance controls, enabling them to generate audit-ready documentation quickly. Beachhead Solutions is offering free licenses of Beachhead Secure for MSPs, including Compliance EZ, for internal use. Now why do we care? These announcements signal the intensifying focus on integrated AI-enhanced and compliance-ready security solutions. They're squarely aimed at IT services providers. Now customer value must be the

[00:06:25] filter. These tools provide potential improvements, but only if they're mapped to real client needs, not just bolted on as product features. Apple has unveiled a new approach to enhance its artificial intelligence models while maintaining user privacy. In a recent blog post, the company announced that it will utilize a method that allows devices to compare synthetic datasets with samples of recent user emails or messages, but only from those who have opted into its

[00:06:55] device analytics program. This innovative technique ensures that user data remains on the device, with only signals indicating the closest synthetic inputs being sent back to Apple. The company aims to use these inputs to refine its AI outputs, such as email summaries. Apple has faced challenges with its AI features, leading to delays in launches and changes in leadership within the Siri team. The new AI training system is

[00:07:21] set to be introduced in beta versions of its operating systems, including iOS and iPadOS 18.5 and macOS 15.5. Why do we care? Apple has a distinctly different approach to AI. Apple's betting on training AI using synthetic datasets matched against local user data, without that data ever leaving the device.

[00:07:44] It's a privacy-preserving method that aligns well with Apple's brand and regulatory climate. Think GDPR, CPRA, and upcoming AI legislation. But the technical compromise is real. Google is still lagging Google and Microsoft in real-world AI utility. Gemini and Copilot already ship with real-time agents. Apple's still in beta and using synthetic data. That said, many providers I speak to are still

[00:08:12] struggling to find real-world utility in Copilot, and that might give Apple a chance to catch up. There might not be true first-mover advantage here in this space. And let's ponder some big ideas. A recent report by Zscaler, commissioned by Cybersecurity Insiders, reveals that security and compliance risks are turning virtual private networks, or VPNs,

[00:08:36] into liabilities for companies. The survey of over 600 IT and security professionals found that 56% view maintaining security as a tough challenge with VPNs. Alarmingly, 92% are concerned that vulnerabilities in these systems can lead to ransomware attacks, prompting 65% of organizations to plan to replace their VPNs within the year. The report highlights that traditional VPNs expose sensitive

[00:09:02] data and hinder operational efficiency, with 73% of respondents citing significant concerns about their effectiveness against evolving cyber threats. As a result, 81% plan to adopt a zero-trust strategy, which aims to enhance security by minimizing access and verifying users continuously. Agentec artificial intelligence is transforming business decision-making by enabling autonomous AI

[00:09:28] agents to make choices without human oversight. According to the trade publication Supply Chain Brain, by 2028, one-third of enterprise software is expected to incorporate the technology, influencing 15% of daily workflow decisions. Statista has predicted that the Agentec AI market value could surpass $47 billion by 2030. The innovation is particularly relevant in sectors like the auto industry, which

[00:09:55] face significant challenges during the semiconductor shortage, leading to a $200 billion loss in revenue. Agentec AI can help companies anticipate demand and streamline supply chain management, enhancing productivity and profitability. Additionally, advancements in natural language processing are allowing to provide customer service experiences that rival human interactions. As more businesses recognize the

[00:10:19] potential of Agentec AI, the global software-as-a-service market is projected to grow from $317 billion to over $1 trillion by 2032, reflecting a shift toward flexible AI solutions. In a recent article from Channel EDE, experts emphasized the importance of security and compliance as managed service providers adopt artificial intelligence. With AI promising greater operational

[00:10:45] efficiencies, MSPs must first address critical challenges including David's sovereignty, model ownership, and access controls. The article highlights that traditional on-premises infrastructures are evolving into complex hybrid solutions, increasing the need for robust frameworks. MSPs are advised to conduct thorough data inventories and develop

[00:11:08] multi-tiered architectures for different levels of data isolation. Furthermore, compliance considerations are particularly crucial for MSPs serving regulated industries like healthcare and finance, requiring them to navigate regulations effectively. Why do we care? So this trio of stories reveals a deeper truth. The foundations of IT service delivery are undergoing a structural shift.

[00:11:33] The providers need to reposition themselves, just react to remain relevant. So here are your questions to ponder. What outdated technologies, not just security ones, should you help your customers abandon? Are you ready with accountability frameworks for you and for your customers for AI? Listen to the live show dropping tomorrow for more insights here or available on YouTube.
