[00:00:02] It's Wednesday, November 20th, 2024, and I'm Dave Sobel. Four things to know today.
[00:00:07] Copilot gets smarter. Microsoft unveils AI agents, analytics dashboards, and new management tools.
[00:00:13] Microsoft's Windows Resiliency Initiative, new tools and security enhancements to prevent future outages.
[00:00:19] The $349 Windows 365 Link, Microsoft's answer to simplified endpoint management, and
[00:00:26] the T-Mobile breach highlighting ongoing cyber espionage threat to global telecom infrastructure.
[00:00:32] This is the Business of Tech.
[00:00:36] Microsoft is hosting their Ignite event this week. There's something for everyone in this set of stories.
[00:00:42] Microsoft has unveiled a series of new artificial intelligence agents designed to enhance productivity
[00:00:47] and collaboration within Microsoft 365 Copilot. These pre-configured agents include tools for SharePoint,
[00:00:54] project management, and real-time meeting assistance, allowing businesses to deploy them with minimal setup.
[00:01:00] Additionally, the new Copilot features aim to automate repetitive tasks, summarize shared
[00:01:05] files in Teams, and manage meetings more efficiently in Outlook. Notably, the Copilot Analytics dashboard
[00:01:11] will help measure the impact of AI investments on productivity, tracking key metrics such as adoption rates.
[00:01:17] Microsoft has established the largest enterprise AI agent ecosystem, with over 100,000 organizations
[00:01:25] creating or editing AI agents through its Copilot studio. This rapid growth, described as a two-fold
[00:01:32] increase in just one quarter, highlighted Microsoft's significant expansion in AI capabilities,
[00:01:37] especially following these announcements. The company now allows enterprises to utilize any of
[00:01:43] the 1,800 large language models in its Azure catalog, moving beyond exclusive reliance on OpenAI.
[00:01:50] Microsoft has launched 10 pre-built autonomous agents targeting core business functions, enhancing its
[00:01:56] enterprise infrastructure that integrates with over 1,400 systems. Early adopters like McKinsey and
[00:02:03] Pets at Home are already reaping benefits, with McKinsey reducing project intake workflows from 20 days to just two.
[00:02:11] Other updates include the Copilot Control System, which provides IT teams with advanced tools to manage and secure AI adoption.
[00:02:19] These aim to facilitate the responsible scaling of AI solutions within organizations.
[00:02:24] The Copilot Business Impact report further aids this by providing valuable insights into how Copilot affects sales,
[00:02:31] finance, and other business functions. It is currently in public preview.
[00:02:35] Microsoft unveiled the Azure AI Foundry, a comprehensive platform that consolidates its enterprise AI services.
[00:02:42] The initiative aims to streamline the development and deployment of AI solutions, addressing the needs
[00:02:47] of business leaders seeking efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The platform features a model catalog with both
[00:02:53] closed and open foundation models, alongside tools like Azure AI Search and Azure Machine Learning.
[00:02:59] Developers will have access to a new software development kit for customizing and managing AI applications,
[00:03:05] along with 25 pre-built templates to facilitate integration. Additionally, the Azure AI Agent Service will
[00:03:12] allow the orchestration of multiple AI tools to automate business processes.
[00:03:17] Why do we care?
[00:03:18] The introduction of pre-configured agents for Microsoft 365 Copilot reflects Microsoft's strategy to simplify
[00:03:25] AI deployment. By minimizing setup, businesses can integrate these tools without requiring advanced
[00:03:30] expertise, broadening AI's accessibility to non-technical teams.
[00:03:35] And the Copilot Analytics dashboard is a differentiator, offering CIOs and IT leaders measurable insights
[00:03:41] into AI's impact. This focus on ROI will appeal to companies cautious about investing in AI, providing a framework
[00:03:49] for justifying and scaling future deployments.
[00:03:51] And by providing advanced management tools for IT teams, Microsoft addresses a critical barrier to
[00:03:57] scaling AI, governance and security. Organizations concerned about compliance, data security or ethical
[00:04:03] AI deployment will find these features part of their portfolio. While enterprise-focused features like the
[00:04:09] Azure AI Foundry and pre-built agents are compelling, smaller businesses may struggle to realize the full value of
[00:04:16] these tools due to limited budgets or technical resources. Or they will be enabled by IT services companies.
[00:04:24] One minute, EDR and MDR providers are telling you you don't need a SIEM. And the next, they're telling you to
[00:04:31] duct tape some logs together and upsell you an add-on.
[00:04:35] Bluemara offers a game-changing cloud SIEM platform designed for IT teams of any size.
[00:04:42] Unlimited ingestion, unlimited integrations, managed detections, guided response, one-year retention,
[00:04:48] and 24 by 7 SOC support. And the best part, Bluemara is free for MSPs. Don't settle for a SIEM-ish
[00:04:57] add-on. Get started with your NFR account at bluemara.com slash radio. That's bluemara.com slash radio.
[00:05:10] Microsoft launched a new Windows Resiliency Initiative to prevent incidents similar to
[00:05:15] the CrowdStrike outage that affected 8.5 million Windows PCs and servers back in July.
[00:05:20] This initiative will introduce significant changes to Windows, enhancing recovery tools
[00:05:25] and improving security measures. A new feature called Quick Machine Recovery will allow IT
[00:05:30] administrators to remotely address issues on machines that cannot boot properly. Microsoft is also
[00:05:36] mandating that security vendors involved in the Microsoft Virus Initiative implement enhanced
[00:05:41] testing and safe deployment practices. The company is also transitioning to using memory-safe
[00:05:46] programming languages like Rust to bolster operating system security. And Microsoft has unveiled new
[00:05:52] details about the Windows 11 Administrator Protection feature, currently available in Preview,
[00:05:57] designed to enhance security by using Windows Hello authentication.
[00:06:01] Microsoft Mechanics This feature, introduced in a preview build last month, aims to protect
[00:06:06] administrative rights by requiring users to authenticate with a PIN or biometric method when
[00:06:12] attempting to modify system settings or install applications. The system operates under standard user
[00:06:18] permissions, creating a temporary admin token that is deleted after the task is completed, thereby reducing the
[00:06:24] risk of malware access to critical resources. This feature is disabled by default and must be enabled
[00:06:31] through group policy. Additionally, the update includes personal data encryption to secure files in the desktop
[00:06:37] documents and pictures folders and introduces smart app control to prevent the installation of unsafe applications.
[00:06:44] Furthermore, Microsoft is implementing hot patching for Windows 11 Enterprise and Windows 365,
[00:06:50] allowing updates to be applied without restarting the device. And Microsoft is offering a total of $4 million in
[00:06:56] bug bounties for security researchers who identify vulnerabilities in select Microsoft products.
[00:07:02] The announcement includes an invitation-only hacking event called the Zero-Day Quest, aimed at the top-ranked
[00:07:08] researcher, while a broader research challenge invites anyone interested to participate. The challenge runs until
[00:07:15] January 19, 2025, as part of the Microsoft Artificial Intelligence Bounty Program. Notable areas of focus for the
[00:07:22] cloud-based data, but most of the Cloud-Boot bounties include critical and important security falls related to remote code
[00:07:26] execution and privilege escalation. Why do we care? Well, tactically,
[00:07:31] there will be a lot of changes to make in managing Windows systems to come. By introducing Quick Machine Recovery,
[00:07:37] Microsoft addresses a significant pain point for IT administrators who need remote tools to minimize downtime and recover
[00:07:44] unbootable systems. And strategically, Microsoft is focusing on strengthening Windows resiliency and security,
[00:07:50] driven by the high-profile CrowdStrike outage and ongoing concerns about the vulnerability in enterprise and personal computing environments.
[00:08:00] And some hardware.
[00:08:02] Microsoft unveiled its new Windows 365 Link, a mini PC designed specifically for office environments during the Ignite conference.
[00:08:10] This compact, fanless device, which costs around $349, connects employees to corporate cloud applications without the need for local storage.
[00:08:20] It supports video conferencing on up to two external monitors at 4K resolution, making it suitable for remote work.
[00:08:28] The device features robust connectivity options, including two USB-A ports, HDMI, USB-C, an audio port, and Ethernet,
[00:08:37] all while being easy to set up and manage through Microsoft Intune.
[00:08:41] Microsoft 365 Link will be available to the general public in April 2025,
[00:08:45] with a preview program open now for select countries, including the United States and Canada.
[00:08:52] And Microsoft announced that it will bring the full capabilities of Windows 11 to the MetaQuest 3 and Quest 3S in December,
[00:09:00] starting with a public preview.
[00:09:01] This integration allows users to connect to a local or cloud instance of Windows in just seconds,
[00:09:06] providing a high-quality multi-monitor workstation experience.
[00:09:10] The new functionality will also support 3D applications, thanks to Microsoft Volumetric Apps technology.
[00:09:17] Developers can register for an API to create plugins for both new and existing 3D Windows desktop applications.
[00:09:24] Microsoft has been working on integrating Windows content into Meta devices since 2022,
[00:09:29] previously launching Microsoft 365 features and Xbox Cloud Gaming on the Quest platform.
[00:09:36] Why do we care?
[00:09:37] Well, the Windows 365 Link creates opportunities for providers to offer endpoint modernization services,
[00:09:44] helping businesses transition to cloud-first environments with managed setup and ongoing support.
[00:09:49] At $349, the device is priced competitively for businesses aiming to reduce the lifecycle management costs
[00:09:56] of traditional PCs while maintaining productivity.
[00:09:59] Native integration with Microsoft Intune simplifies deployment and ongoing management,
[00:10:03] appealing to IT administrators and IT service providers responsible for scaling endpoint devices across organizations.
[00:10:10] This feels like a natural fit for a significant segment.
[00:10:14] Spatial computing isn't dead, it's figuring out its use cases.
[00:10:17] Microsoft is following up on its move of discontinuing the HoloLens by leaning into Meta's offerings.
[00:10:23] Now we'll see if anyone figures out what to do with these platforms.
[00:10:29] Something non-Microsoft today.
[00:10:31] I covered Volt Typhoon and the risks to core infrastructure.
[00:10:34] Well, T-Mobile's network was hacked in a significant cyber espionage operation attributed to a Chinese intelligence agency.
[00:10:42] This breach is part of a larger campaign targeting multiple U.S. and international telecommunications companies.
[00:10:48] Reports indicate that hackers aim to spy on the communications of high-value intelligence targets,
[00:10:53] although specific details about the timing of the attack remain unclear.
[00:10:58] T-Mobile stated that at this time, their systems and customer data have not been significantly impacted.
[00:11:03] The FBI and the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency recently noted that China-linked hackers
[00:11:09] have intercepted surveillance data intended for American law enforcement after breaching several telecom companies.
[00:11:16] The Chinese government has denied these allegations.
[00:11:19] Why do we care?
[00:11:21] Well, the T-Mobile breach is a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities in telecommunications infrastructure,
[00:11:26] which is a foundational element of the global digital economy.
[00:11:30] For enterprises and service providers, it underscores the importance of proactive security measures
[00:11:35] such as monitoring, encryption, and secure communication alternatives.
[00:11:39] Moreover, as geopolitical tensions influence the cyber landscape,
[00:11:43] businesses should expect an escalation in state-sponsored campaigns targeting critical sectors.
