Inflation, IT Spending Trends, AI Challenges, and Kaseya's Free Hardware Initiative

We dive in on the latest economic trends, focusing on rising inflation and its impact on consumer confidence. The consumer price index has seen an increase to 2.6% as of October, driven largely by persistent housing costs, which rose by 4% in October alone. Neil Kashkari, president of the Minneapolis Federal Reserve, highlights the housing sector as a significant challenge in the inflation landscape, while also expressing uncertainty about the economic implications of President-elect Trump's proposed policies.

The episode also delves into a recent Gartner report that reveals a stark contrast in the success rates of digital initiatives among organizations. While only 48% of digital projects meet or exceed their business outcome targets, a group termed the "digital vanguard" boasts a success rate of 71%. This disparity underscores the importance of collaboration between chief information officers and other business leaders to achieve successful digital transformations. Sobel emphasizes that organizations may face initiative fatigue, leading to hesitance in further investments without clear returns on investment.

Host Dave Sobel further explores the growing skepticism among CIOs regarding generative artificial intelligence (AI) two years after the launch of ChatGPT. Many organizations are struggling to scale AI projects, with only 2% of companies possessing the necessary talent and technology to succeed. The rising costs associated with generative AI, particularly in cloud services, have intensified pressure on IT leaders to deliver results. This situation presents an opportunity for IT service providers to offer specialized consulting and managed services to help organizations navigate these challenges.

Finally, the episode highlights recent developments from Kaseya and Aero, focusing on their strategies to enhance service offerings. Kaseya has introduced free hardware for its Datto Sirius appliances, aiming to reduce financial barriers for managed service providers. Meanwhile, Aero has integrated AI tools into its cloud platform, AeroSphere, to improve operational efficiency. Sobel concludes by noting that the integration of AI into operational platforms is becoming a standard expectation, urging service providers to stay informed about these trends to enhance their offerings and internal operations.

[00:00:02] It's Tuesday, November 19th, 2024, and I'm Dave Solberg. Four things to know today.

[00:00:07] Inflation rises amid housing challenges as the political sentiment drives consumer confidence shifts.

[00:00:13] A Gartner Report highlights digital initiative success dividing amid IT spending surge and AI expectations.

[00:00:22] CIO skepticism grows as generative AI drives rising costs, scaling challenges, and vendor prioritization.

[00:00:29] And Kaseya offers free hardware for Datosiria Suppliances as Aero integrates AI into Aerosphere.

[00:00:36] This is the Business of Tech.

[00:00:40] In a recent visit to Axios, Neil Kashkari, president of the Minneapolis Federal Reserve, discussed the latest inflation data,

[00:00:48] revealing that the consumer price index rose to 2.6% over the 12 months ending in October, up from 2.4% in September.

[00:00:57] He highlighted the persistent impact of high rents, which increased by 4% in October alone, and are upped by 4.9% over the past year.

[00:01:07] Kashkari noted that while inflation pressures have eased significantly over the past two years, the housing sector remains a challenge,

[00:01:15] often referred to as the Achilles heel of inflation data.

[00:01:18] He also expressed uncertainty regarding the economic implications of President-elect Trump's proposed policies on deportations and tariffs,

[00:01:27] emphasizing that the actual effects on inflation in the labor market remain unknown.

[00:01:31] And revealing that sentiment is just that, sentiment.

[00:01:35] In a recent analysis, Axios highlighted the impact of politics on consumer sentiment,

[00:01:40] revealing that Republican optimism surged following Donald Trump's election victory,

[00:01:45] with consumer sentiment hitting 100.6 on November 11th, according to the Morning Consult Consumer Sentiment Index.

[00:01:53] This marks a significant shift as sentiment had been negative among Republicans prior to the election.

[00:02:00] Why do we care?

[00:02:02] Your sentiment on the economy may be tied to political affiliation.

[00:02:06] So, expect some shifts in business owner strategies.

[00:02:09] Some may now lean in, and other businesses may delay IT spending as they assess the risk of increased costs,

[00:02:16] supply disruptions, or changes in consumer demand.

[00:02:18] Additionally, the sharp rise in Republican optimism may not translate into sustained economic growth or spending,

[00:02:26] as it's driven more by post-election enthusiasm rather than tangible economic changes.

[00:02:32] Use political sentiment as a secondary input rather than a primary driver in forecasting

[00:02:37] to avoid overreacting to short-term mood swings.

[00:02:43] Today's episode is supported by CoreView.

[00:02:46] Your customers need your Microsoft 365 expertise,

[00:02:50] and CoreView has the only M365 management platform designed for MSPs.

[00:02:56] Manage hundreds of tenants, automate manual tasks, and monitor compliance,

[00:03:00] all while intelligently comparing to the baseline.

[00:03:03] With a no-code control approach,

[00:03:05] CoreView revolutionizes your Microsoft 365 administration.

[00:03:09] This powerful platform enables automatic reporting and remediation,

[00:03:13] ensuring optimal performance and security.

[00:03:16] The best part?

[00:03:17] You achieve this high level of service without the need for a large workforce,

[00:03:21] allowing you to focus on growing your business through efficiency.

[00:03:25] Want to know more?

[00:03:27] Visit coreview.com slash MSP and find out more.

[00:03:33] According to a recent survey by Gartner,

[00:03:36] only 48% of digital initiatives meet or exceed business outcome targets.

[00:03:40] The survey included over 3,000 chief information officers and technology executives

[00:03:45] and revealed that a group known as the Digital Vanguard

[00:03:48] achieves a significantly higher success rate,

[00:03:51] with 71% of their initiatives succeeding.

[00:03:54] The report highlights the importance of collaboration between chief information officers

[00:03:58] and their peers in other business areas, suggesting that their fortunes are intertwined

[00:04:03] for successful digital transformation.

[00:04:06] And European organizations are predicted to significantly increase their IT services spending in 2025,

[00:04:12] with a focus on harnessing the benefits of generative artificial intelligence.

[00:04:15] According to Gartner, overall IT spending in Europe is expected to reach $1.2 trillion,

[00:04:22] marking an impressive 8.7% increase and the highest growth rate since the post-pandemic surge in 2021.

[00:04:31] Notably, spending on AI-related IT services is anticipated to rise by 21%, reaching $94 billion.

[00:04:39] Globally, IT spending is set to hit $5.74 trillion in 2025, reflecting a 9.3% increase from the previous year.

[00:04:51] However, IT leaders are advised to temper their expectations,

[00:04:54] as the capabilities of current generative AI models may not meet the high hopes placed upon them.

[00:05:01] Why do we care?

[00:05:02] Well, the stark contrast between the digital vanguards, at 71% success, and the broader market, at only 48%,

[00:05:10] highlights the tangible business value of structured, well-executed digital strategies.

[00:05:15] IT service providers must position themselves as enablers for clients to achieve that vanguard status

[00:05:21] by fostering cross-functional collaboration and measurable outcomes.

[00:05:26] And after years of digital transformation rhetoric, some organizations may experience initiative fatigue,

[00:05:33] leading to resistance against further investment without clear, immediate ROI.

[00:05:38] This could dampen enthusiasm for ambitious new projects and make change management a greater challenge.

[00:05:45] Recently, Carolyn April of CompTIA predicted this on my live show.

[00:05:49] So, prioritize achievable generative AI use cases with measurable ROI to build trust and demonstrate value.

[00:05:58] Be transparent about limitations and actively manage client expectations.

[00:06:02] Also a potential?

[00:06:03] Offer second-chance services to organizations that have struggled with past digital initiatives,

[00:06:09] providing expertise in troubleshooting and optimization.

[00:06:14] In a recent analysis by CIO Dive, skepticism among chief information officers regarding generative artificial intelligence

[00:06:21] has grown two years after the launch of ChatGPT.

[00:06:25] Initially drawn by the tool's ease of use, many organizations are now facing challenges in scaling AI projects,

[00:06:31] with only 2% of companies possessing the necessary talent and technology to succeed, according to a survey from Infosys.

[00:06:39] The pressure to deliver results has intensified, with CIOs reporting frustration over investments that have yet to show significant returns.

[00:06:48] The costs associated with generative AI has also surged, with average cloud costs rising by 30% in the past year.

[00:06:57] A recent survey conducted by Flexera, which included responses from 800 IT leaders globally,

[00:07:03] found that Microsoft is the top vendor companies plan to invest in.

[00:07:07] OpenAI debuted in the survey at fourth place, following Google and Amazon Web Services.

[00:07:12] The survey highlighted that 42% of IT leaders believe integrating artificial intelligence will significantly impact their organizations,

[00:07:19] while 26% prioritized reducing security risks, and 25% aimed to minimize IT costs.

[00:07:27] Flexera's report also revealed that a significant portion of IT executives, between 20 and 25%,

[00:07:33] expressed concerns about overspending on various technology sectors, including cloud services and security tools.

[00:07:41] Why do we care?

[00:07:43] Only 2% of companies having the necessary talent and technology to succeed signals a fundamental readiness gap.

[00:07:50] IT service providers should see this as an opportunity to offer specialized consulting, training, and managed services to address the barriers to scaling AI initiatives.

[00:08:00] The 30% rising cloud costs linked to generative AI is a red flag.

[00:08:05] Many organizations underestimated the operational expenses of running AI models at scale,

[00:08:11] especially when it comes to the compute-intensive nature of training and inference workloads.

[00:08:16] Rising cloud costs are not unique to generative AI.

[00:08:20] Inflation in cloud pricing could dampen broader digital transformation efforts,

[00:08:25] forcing organizations to reconsider multi-cloud strategies or repatriate workloads to on-premises data centers.

[00:08:33] So address concerns about scalability costs and security upfront to position your services as low risk and high value.

[00:08:43] Kaseya has announced significant enhancements to its backup solutions for managed service providers,

[00:08:48] including the introduction of free hardware for its Datto Sirius appliances.

[00:08:53] During the recent DattoCon in Miami,

[00:08:55] Kaseya revealed that its Datto Sirius S5X and S5X4 appliances are now available with no hardware costs for any contract duration,

[00:09:05] even on a month-to-month basis, aiming to help providers deliver optimal disaster recovery solutions.

[00:09:11] The company has also invested $10 million into its new backup concierge program.

[00:09:18] Arrow has enhanced its cloud platform, Arrow Sphere, by integrating artificial intelligence tools to improve operational efficiency and partner experiences.

[00:09:26] The distributor introduced the Arrow Sphere Assistant earlier this year and now allows partners to create custom AI assistants tailored to their specific needs.

[00:09:36] The AI capabilities are currently available on a limited release for Arrow Sphere users.

[00:09:41] Why do we care?

[00:09:43] Well, Kaseya is leaning into their strategy of using their positioning to compete on price.

[00:09:48] By eliminating hardware costs for Datto Sirius appliances, even for month-to-month contracts,

[00:09:54] Kaseya is addressing a key barrier for providers, upfront capital expenditures.

[00:09:59] This move is likely to appeal to smaller providers or those operating on tighter margins,

[00:10:03] as it reduces financial risk while enabling access to enterprise-grade disaster recovery.

[00:10:09] And offering free hardware might devalue the perceived premium quality of Datto Sirius appliances,

[00:10:15] so providers might question how Kaseya is recouping costs and whether the model is sustainable in the long term,

[00:10:21] potentially leading to concerns about hidden trade-offs or future price hikes.

[00:10:26] The limited release approach suggests Arrow is cautiously evaluating the adoption and effectiveness of its tools.

[00:10:32] This aligns with a broader trend of companies piloting generative AI solutions before full-scale deployment,

[00:10:38] likely to ensure quality and gather partner feedback.

[00:10:41] AI integration into cloud and operational platforms is becoming a standard expectation.

[00:10:46] Service providers should stay informed about AI trends

[00:10:49] and consider how the tools can improve internal operations or enhance customer offerings.
