Experts in artificial intelligence (AI) express optimism about its potential, yet public sentiment reveals a significant trust gap, with many feeling anxious and lacking control over AI's role in their lives. A recent survey indicates that while 79% of Generation Z engages with AI tools, only 27% are hopeful about their benefits. This disconnect is further emphasized by Shopify's new hiring policy, which requires employees to justify why they cannot use AI for their tasks before seeking additional resources. This shift reflects a broader trend in the tech industry, where AI adoption is becoming a mandate, despite public skepticism.
Cisco's 2025 Data Privacy Benchmark Study highlights the growing complexity of privacy issues as organizations increasingly rely on AI. The study shows that 86% of privacy professionals support legislation that enhances privacy, and 96% believe that investments in privacy yield positive returns. However, concerns about the risks associated with generative AI persist, emphasizing the need for organizations to align their data governance and AI initiatives to build consumer trust. This integration of privacy into AI strategies is crucial for long-term customer relationships.
A recent incident involving a journalist's accidental access to a sensitive military group chat underscores the vulnerabilities of consumer technology in government operations. The error was attributed to a Siri feature that mistakenly updated contact information, leading to a significant breach of operational trust. This incident serves as a reminder of the potential consequences when AI assistance is not properly managed, highlighting the importance of maintaining security protocols in sensitive environments.
In the realm of cloud technology, Nerdio has launched an updated management platform aimed at enhancing the efficiency of Microsoft Cloud services. The new version introduces advanced tools for planning, migration, and cost optimization, addressing the growing demand for better management capabilities. Meanwhile, Enable has enhanced its platform to improve cyber resiliency for Microsoft Cloud users, incorporating machine learning to monitor user behavior and detect anomalies. These developments reflect a broader trend of integrating advanced technologies to optimize cloud management and security, emphasizing the need for ongoing innovation in the industry.

[00:00:02] It's Wednesday, April 9th, 2025, and I'm Dave Sobel. Four things to know today. Experts love AI, but the public isn't so sure, and Shopify's making it mandatory. Privacy pays off, but AI is raising the stakes, says Cisco's Global Report. Siri-driven contact update blamed for the journalists' accidental access to the military group chat, and two conferences, one goal, making Microsoft Cloud easier, cheaper, and safer.
[00:00:30] This is the Business of Tech. A recent report from the Pew Research Center reveals a significant trust gap between artificial intelligence experts and the general public. While three-quarters of AI experts believe the technology will benefit them, only a quarter of Americans share this sentiment.
[00:00:49] The survey, which included 1,000 AI experts and more than 5,000 adults, shows that the public feels anxious and distrustful, with 60% stating they have little control over AI's role in their lives. Additionally, gender disparities are evident, as male experts express more optimism about AI than their female counterparts.
[00:01:11] Despite the growing use of AI tools among Generation Z, who report a high engagement rate of 79%, many feel anxious rather than excited about AI, with only 27% expressing hope for its benefits. And they may well be right. Shopify CEO, Tobias Lutke, has announced a shift in the company's hiring approach amidst the rise of artificial intelligence.
[00:01:36] Employees will now need to demonstrate why they cannot accomplish their tasks using AI before requesting additional staff or resources. He emphasized the need for employees to integrate AI into their daily work, noting that it has significantly boosted productivity. He stated that individuals leveraging AI have been able to tackle challenging tasks more effectively.
[00:02:00] The company, which has experienced a reduction in workforce from 8,300 to 8,100 over the past year, plans to factor AI usage into performance evaluations. As tech firms invest hundreds of billions in AI development, the industry is also seeing significant layoffs, with approximately 152,000 jobs cut across 549 companies in 2024, according to layoffs.fyi. Why do we care?
[00:02:30] There's a growing chasm between public sentiment about AI and how tech leaders are doubling down on it as a productivity mandate. This isn't just philosophical. It's operational policy now, as shown by Shopify's AI-first hiring stance. The trust gap is a warning. Customers may not embrace AI simply because it's available. Providers can't assume enthusiasm.
[00:02:56] Strategic positioning must include trust-building, education, and clear, measurable value from AI tools. Shopify linking AI usage to employee reviews is a strong signal of what's coming. AI adoption won't be optional. Their stance, AI-first-hire-later, is efficient in theory.
[00:03:17] But if clients mimic this model without proper support or tooling, it could result in overworked staff, half-baked implementations, and underperforming AI initiatives. That's all opportunity for training, yet also risk. The winners will be those who bridge the emotional gap with strategic enablement, not just those who install another LLM. The losers won't bridge it.
[00:03:43] Are your customers getting the most from their Microsoft 365 Business Premium subscriptions? Are you delivering maximum value while ensuring best-in-class margins? Nerdio's new modern work features let you streamline the management of Microsoft technologies like Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Intune, and Defender. Reduce the need for multiple tools, consolidate your vendor stack, and deliver greater value to your customers.
[00:04:10] Help your customers maximize their investments, free up your team for strategic tasks, and drive meaningful business outcomes. With Nerdio Manager for MSP, a single, flexible platform with mix-and-match plans ensures a flexible, perfect fit for you and your customers. Deliver solutions that achieve real business impact. [00:04:36] Cisco has released its 2025 Data Privacy Benchmark Study, revealing a growing complexity in the privacy landscape amid increasing reliance on artificial intelligence. Conducted across 12 countries with insights from 2,600 privacy and security professionals, the study highlights that 86% of respondents support privacy legislation, acknowledging its positive impact on business operations.
[00:05:03] Notably, 96% believe that investments in privacy yield returns greater than their costs. While familiarity with generative AI is on the rise, with 63% reporting that they are familiar with it, concerns about unintended risks persist. The study underscores the importance of local data storage, viewed as safer by 90% of organizations, even as they continue to trust global providers for better data protection.
[00:05:30] Cisco emphasizes that privacy and proper data governance are essential for responsible AI, calling for organizations to strategically align their data governance and AI initiatives to ensure sustainable growth and consumer trust. Why do we care? Cisco's Data Privacy Benchmark Study reveals a deepening organizational commitment to privacy, but it's what sits between the lines that MSPs and IT services firms should focus on.
[00:05:57] The operational consequences of AI adoption under complex, often conflicting data privacy expectations. Data privacy is no longer a silo. It's the foundation for AI, trust, and long-term customer relationships. For services firms, this is a signal to bake privacy and data governance into everything from onboarding to AI strategy. It's not a separate service line. It's the scaffolding for everyone that follows.
[00:06:28] There's some clarity now on how a journalist ended up in that group chat involving the White House and a military strike discussion. A Siri feature reportedly caused it. Feature, not a bug. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz mistakenly added, manually, Atlantic Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg to that single group chat intended for a Trump spokesperson.
[00:06:51] The error occurred when Waltz approved a Siri suggestion that updated his contact list, inadvertently replacing the intended number with Goldberg's. The White House, which had authorized officials to use signal for secure communications, faced criticism as this incident highlights the vulnerabilities of consumer products in sensitive government operations. Why do we care?
[00:07:15] No hacking, no espionage, just a poorly timed AI suggestion accepted by a human. This isn't about the tools and don't fall down that rabbit hole. The consequences of this error would be significantly smaller and not potentially break laws if the information had not been discussed in an inappropriate platform. It's also a preview of where unmanaged AI assistance collides with operational trust.
[00:07:43] At their NerdioCon event, Nerdio has launched Nerdio Manager for Enterprise version 7.0, a management platform for Microsoft Cloud Technologies. The new version enhances support for Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop by introducing advanced tools aimed at improving planning, migration, automation, and cost optimization. The update comes in response to the growing demand for better management capabilities as organizations shift to cloud-first computing.
[00:08:10] CEO Vadim Vladimirsky emphasized the need for enhanced automation and cost optimization to tackle the challenges faced by IT leaders. The platform now offers intelligent modeling and automated workflows that simplify transitions from on-premises systems. Additionally, it provides enhanced visibility through usage dashboards and integrates with Microsoft Intune for streamlined administration.
[00:08:35] Users can expect AI-driven recommendations to optimize licensing and prevent overspending, making cloud management more efficient. With this release, Nerdio also introduces updated pricing models to offer greater flexibility for enterprises managing multiple virtual environments. And at their Empower event, Enable has enhanced its platform to bolster cyber resiliency for Microsoft Cloud users by incorporating AdLumen breach prevention for Microsoft 365.
[00:09:03] The integration addresses the growing threat of identity-based cyber attacks, which target cloud identities rather than traditional endpoints. As cybercriminals increasingly infiltrate organizations through stolen credentials, Enable's technology employs machine learning models to monitor user behavior and detect anomalies in real time. The platform also offers comprehensive solutions for Microsoft 365, including complete backup and recovery, user management, and advanced email security.
[00:09:33] Disclosure, I'm an Enable shareholder. Why do we care? Managing cloud costs has been a recurring theme, and providers should begin pitching cloud cost governance and license optimization as services, not one-time setups. Enable's announcement is the next logical step in their acquisition of AdLumen. From full backup to advanced email security and user behavior monitoring, Enable is pushing a stacked Microsoft Cloud security story.
[00:10:01] Will the market respond? Thanks for listening. Today is International ASMR Day. Nope, not going there. I may lean into National Cherish and Antique Day. My retro video game systems are clearly becoming antiques. I'll be speaking on a webinar on April 22nd about inbound marketing in the AI era with the author of a new book.
