Small Businesses Embrace Digital Transformation Amid Economic Uncertainty

The episode highlights a surge in small business digital transformation initiatives, with over 80% of surveyed leaders either adopting or considering AI technology. This trend is accompanied by a forecasted 40% increase in capital expenditures, reflecting a strong optimism among business leaders regarding future profits and sales. The episode also notes a recovery in the global smartphone market, driven by consumer demand for ultra-premium devices, and a substantial rise in data center spending, primarily fueled by hyperscalers and enterprise investments.

The podcast delves into the job market, reporting that the U.S. added 256,000 jobs in December 2024, marking the largest increase since March. Unemployment rates fell to 4.1%, with wages rising by 3.9% year-over-year. CompTIA's report indicates a growth of 7,000 tech jobs in December, despite losses in PC and semiconductor manufacturing. The demand for roles in software development, IT project management, and cybersecurity remains robust, with nearly half of job postings not requiring a four-year degree, suggesting increased accessibility in tech careers.

In a significant industry shift, the Computing Technology Industry Association has rebranded to the Global Technology Industry Association (GTIA), focusing on serving the IT channel. This change follows the sale of CompTIA's training and certification business, which will now operate separately. The GTIA aims to maintain affordable membership dues while expanding charitable initiatives in technology. Meanwhile, Kaseya's CEO Fred Voccola transitions to vice chairman, leaving behind a legacy of growth as the company seeks a new leader to navigate its future.

The episode also covers recent acquisitions, including WatchGuard Technologies' purchase of ActZero, a threat analysis startup, and 1Password's acquisition of Trellica, a provider of SaaS access management tools. These moves reflect a broader trend of platform expansion within the tech industry.

[00:00:55] WatchGuard und 1Password-Mak-Moves, Platform Expansion, Security, und SaaS Simplify. Das ist die Businesses von Tech. A recent JP Morgan Chase report highlights a surge in small business digital transformation initiatives. Over 80% of surveyed leaders are adopting or considering AI technology, with nearly half planning to expand AI applications in operations.

[00:01:21] To support these efforts, 40% expect to boost capital expenditures, despite ongoing economic uncertainty. Optimism remains high, with two-thirds of leaders forecasting increased profits and sales. AI adoption has doubled year-over-year, signaling a decisive pivot toward technological enhancement. According to Counterpoint Research, the global smartphone market grew 4% year-over-year last year, recovering from a decade low.

[00:01:49] Samsung and Apple maintained their leadership. Consumer demand shifted toward ultra-premium devices, driving significant revenue growth. Despite mixed responses to Apple's iPhone 16, improvements in macroeconomic conditions contributed to steady market recovery, with expectations for continued revenue gains in premium segments. And data center spending hit $282 billion in 2024,

[00:02:16] a 34% increase driven by hyperscalers and rising enterprise investments, reporting by Synergy Research Group. Generative AI and GPUs played pivotal roles, reinforcing the dominance of public cloud providers like AWS and Microsoft. Enterprise spending rose 21%, reflecting renewed interest in cloud adoption. Synergy predicts hyperscalers will control nearly two-thirds of global infrastructure by 2030,

[00:02:45] with cloud capacity doubling over the next four years. The U.S. added 256,000 jobs in December 2024, the largest increase since March and well above expectations. Unemployment fell to 4.1%, while wages rose 3.9% year-over-year. Chicago Fed President Austin Goolsbee expressed confidence in the market's resilience, highlighting its stability compared to previous cycles.

[00:03:12] And CompTIA reports tech employment grew by 7,000 in December, with core tech workers nearing 6.5 million. Despite job losses in PC and semiconductor manufacturing, demand for software development, IT project management, and cybersecurity remains robust. Nearly half of job postings didn't require a four-year degree, signaling greater accessibility in tech careers. And D&H Distributing announced their growth,

[00:03:41] outperforming market growth in 2024, with its commercial IT business expanding by 10%, and modern security solutions achieving 63% growth. The company trained over 2,500 partners on AI readiness and PC refresh strategies, added 1,000 new MSP customers, and achieved milestones in white-glove services with 200,000 units sold. D&H continues to lead through robust partner support and innovative offerings.

[00:04:10] Why do we care? Whether in smartphones or IT services, customers gravitate toward high-value, feature-rich offerings. Providers should note the growing demand for AI solutions tailored to small-scale operations. The expected increase in capital expenditures of 40% presents opportunities for IT service providers to pitch solutions related to AI implementation, integration, and support. Also to highlight, while overall tech employment grew,

[00:04:40] declines in PC and semiconductor manufacturing could signal headwinds for IT hardware. Be warned there. Recommendations? Focus on bundling services with high-end devices and delivering added value through lifecycle management and security. Offer solutions that address the implementation and optimization challenges faced by small businesses and enterprises.

[00:05:02] As hyperscalers grow, diversify your offerings to mitigate the risks of vendor lock-in and competitive pressures. With as many breaches and security concerns as I report in this show, it should be obvious that cybersecurity is not just about technology, but also the human expertise needed to interpret and respond to complex threats. Huntress is focused on elevating SMBs and MSPs around the world.

[00:05:31] Huntress has a suite of fully-managed cybersecurity solutions powered by a 24x7 human-led SOC, dedicated to continuous monitoring, expert investigation, and rapid response. And the proof is the execution. Huntress is the number one rated EDR for SMBs on G2. Want to know more about the platform? Visit huntress.com slash MSP radio to learn more.

[00:06:00] The Global Technology Industry Association, formerly known as CompTIA Community, has officially rebranded to focus exclusively on serving the information technology channel. This change follows the sale of the Computing Technology Industry Association's CompTIA brand and its training and certification business, which will now operate separately. The association continues to support over 2,000 managed service providers, solution providers, technology vendors, and distributors,

[00:06:29] representing tens of thousands of professionals globally. With a substantial endowment created from the sale, the association plans to keep membership dues affordable while expanding charitable initiatives in technology. The organization is in the process of searching for a new chief executive officer. Why do we care? CompTIA is now a for-profit training organization, and GTIA is the association.

[00:06:56] We're watching for the new CEO to bring forth the vision of execution. We'll all watch this space. Kaseya has announced that its CEO, Fred Vokala, will transition to the role of vice chairman, focusing on long-term innovation and strategy while aiding in the search for a new CEO. Under his leadership over the past decade, Kaseya has experienced significant growth, expanding from a single product provider to a comprehensive platform,

[00:07:23] now boasting over $1.5 billion in annual recurring revenue. The company recently launched Kaseya 365, a unified subscription service designed to meet the needs of IT professionals. Kaseya Future is looking towards a potential private offering after achieving its strongest quarterly and yearly results in history. The change in leadership comes as the managed service provider market faces increased competition and challenges. Why do we care?

[00:07:51] I'm not sure we really do yet. Fred is going out while on top. Kaseya displaced ConnectWise as the market leader after the latter's 21-year run on the top with a massive run rate. 10 years is a long time. Now, I don't believe an IPO is coming, and I expect they are looking for a leader to manage from $1.5 billion to, say, the $5 to $10 billion range, which is a different skill set in leadership.

[00:08:16] I went into depth on this on Marvin B.'s IT Business Podcast with links in the show notes if you'd like more further information. I also wanted to note a couple of acquisitions. Seattle cybersecurity company WatchGuard Technologies has acquired the threat analysis startup Act Zero for an undisclosed amount. That's announced this week. Founded in 1996, WatchGuard has a history of acquiring companies to enhance its security product offerings.

[00:08:43] Act Zero, established in 2019 and based in San Francisco, specialized in managed detection and response security services. WatchGuard's CEO emphasized that this acquisition will boost the company's capacity and technology, allowing it to expand its services. Act Zero's CEO will serve as an advisor to WatchGuard, while Hal Libby, co-founder of Act Zero, will step into the role of general manager of security services in the merged entity.

[00:09:11] 1Password has acquired Trellica, a provider of software as a service access management tools, marking the largest acquisition by revenue in the company's 18-year history. While the deal's financial details remain undisclosed, 1Password aims to enhance its extended access management platform, designed to secure identities and manage access to applications and devices.

[00:09:33] Founded in 2018, Trellica offers tools for managing SaaS applications, including features for employee onboarding, identifying unmanaged applications and optimizing spending. With the rise of Shadow IT and SaaS sprawl heightening security risks, the acquisition aims to empower organizations to govern access better while improving employee productivity. Why do we care? Why do we care? The trend to be a platform continues. These are both platform expansion plays.

[00:10:01] Notably, 1Password has made investments in expanding its channel and MSP business, as I highlighted with an interview with the new channel chief, Jason Eberhardt, just recently.
